RSV is a leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia in infants. In India, RSV is responsible for more than 1 Lakh paediatric hospitalizations every year, especially during the monsoon and winter months (August–January). Babies under 6 months, premature infants, and children with weak lungs or heart conditions are at the highest risk of severe RSV disease. RSV antibody immunization significantly reduces this risk and helps avoid hospitalization.

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) antibody immunization is a modern method of protecting infants and young children from severe RSV disease. Instead of teaching the immune system to produce antibodies (like a vaccine does), antibody immunization directly provides ready-made protective antibodies. These antibodies circulate in the child’s body and protect them throughout the RSV season, when the risk of infection and hospitalization is highest.

Prevention is the key and immunization is the best way to prevent RSV infection.

RSV Antibody Immunization schedule

Who Can Get the RSV Antibody Immunization Vaccine?

RSV antibody immunization is recommended for all infants in their first RSV season, regardless of whether they are born full-term or premature, because this is when they are most vulnerable to severe RSV illness.

It is especially important for babies younger than 6 months, as they are at the highest risk of hospitalization. High-risk toddlers up to 24 months of age can also receive it, particularly those with conditions such as prematurity, chronic lung disease, congenital heart disease, or weakened immune systems.

RSV Antibody Immunization schedule for adults in Noida

Currently, RSV Antibody Immunization is not recommended for adults. It is designed specifically for:

- Infants in their first RSV season

- High-risk children up to 24 months entering their second season

Missed RSV Antibody Immunization?

If your baby missed the scheduled RSV antibody immunization, it’s not too late. The dose can still be given to infants and toddlers up to 2 years of age, any time before or during the RSV season (typically August–January in India) to provide protection.

Infants under 8 months of age entering their first RSV season should receive the injection as soon as possible, even if the season has already started.

High-risk children (up to 24 months) who qualify for a second-season dose should also receive it promptly if missed.

Once given, protection starts quickly and lasts for about 5 months, covering the peak RSV period. If a baby already had a severe RSV infection, doctors may reassess whether the antibody is still needed. Parents should consult their paediatrician without delay for rescheduling, as RSV infections spread rapidly during seasonal outbreaks.

Frequently Asked Questions for RSV Immunization in Noida

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) antibody immunization is a modern method of protecting infants and young children from severe RSV disease. Instead of teaching the immune system to produce antibodies (like a vaccine does), antibody immunization directly provides ready-made protective antibodies. These antibodies circulate in the child’s body and protect them throughout the RSV season, when the risk of infection and hospitalization is highest.

RSV spreads easily through:

·        Airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes

·        Direct contact (kissing, hugging, touching)

·        Contaminated surfaces like toys, tables, or door handles

·        RSV can survive hours on surfaces and 30+ minutes on hands

RSV is a leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia in infants. In India, RSV is responsible for thousands of pediatric hospitalizations every year, especially during the monsoon and winter months (August–January). Babies under 6 months, premature infants, and children with weak lungs or heart conditions are at the highest risk of severe RSV disease. Antibody immunization significantly reduces this risk and helps avoid hospitalization.

While anyone can get RSV, some groups are at higher risk of severe illness:

·        Infants under 6 months – Their immune systems are still developing, making them more vulnerable.

·        Premature babies – Especially those born before 29 weeks or with underdeveloped lungs.

·        Children with chronic lung disease or congenital heart disease – RSV can worsen breathing and oxygen problems.

·        Babies with weakened immunity – Due to medical conditions or treatments.

·        Adults aged 60 years and above – Seniors are more prone to serious respiratory complications.

·        People with chronic illnesses – Such as asthma, COPD, diabetes, or weakened immune systems.

Timing is crucial. RSV immunization is usually given just before or during the RSV season, which in India is mostly between August and January, coinciding with monsoon and winter months and increased viral circulation. Timely immunization before the season starts ensures protection throughout the high-risk season.

Clinical trials show that RSV Antibody Immunization reduces the risk of hospitalization due to RSV by up to 70–80% in infants. It not only prevents infection but also decreases the severity of illness in those who do get infected. This makes it one of the most effective tools against RSV in babies.

One dose provides protection for about 5 months, which is typically enough to cover the full RSV season. If the child is still vulnerable in the next season, a second round may be needed.

Most babies experience little to no side effects. When they do occur, they are usually mild and short-lived:

·        Soreness or swelling at the injection site

·        Redness or slight bruising

·        Irritability, fussiness, or reduced appetite

·        Rarely, allergic reactions like rash or breathing difficulty

Its advised to keep the child under observation for 15–30 minutes after the injection to ensure safety.

If missed, the baby remains at risk of RSV infection. Since RSV season lasts for several months, parents should contact their doctor as soon as possible to check if the injection can still be administered for effective protection.

Yes. Premature babies are among the highest risk groups for severe RSV infection because their lungs are underdeveloped. Immunization is especially important for them unless a doctor advises otherwise due to other health conditions.

Yes. Infection does not guarantee long-term immunity. Babies can catch RSV again, even within the same season. Immunization provides reliable protection for the remaining months of the season.

No, there are no RSV Vaccines available for infants or children in India.

The dosage of RSV Antibody varies based on the child’s age and weight:

·        Infants under 5 kg who are born during or entering their first RSV season receive 50 mg (0.5 mL).

·        Infants 5 kg or above in their first RSV season receive 100 mg (1 mL).

·        Young children entering their second RSV season are given 200 mg, administered as two separate intramuscular injections of 100 mg/mL each at different sites (preferably on separate limbs or at least 2.5 cm apart) during the same visit, regardless of weight.

RSV Antibody is administered intramuscularly: in the anterolateral thigh for children under 12 months, and in either the anterolateral thigh or the deltoid muscle for children aged 12–24 months.

No, RSV antibody and RSV vaccine are not the same, though both are used to protect against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).

·       RSV Antibody (Passive Immunization)

What it is: A laboratory-made antibody that directly fights RSV in the body.

How it works: Provides immediate protection by giving ready-made antibodies. The body does not produce its own immune response.

Duration of protection: Usually short-term, typically lasts a few months.

Example: Beyfortus (nirsevimab) for infants.

Use: Recommended & approved for high-risk infants or young children, especially before RSV season.

·       RSV Vaccine (Active Immunization)

What it is: A vaccine stimulates the body’s immune system to produce its own antibodies against RSV.

How it works: The body learns to recognize and fight RSV in the future.

Duration of protection: Usually longer-lasting, potentially years.

Example: Arexvy by GSK and Abrysvo by Pfizer.

Use: Recommended & approved for older adults currently in US and other developed countries, not in India.

Yes, RSV vaccines are available and have been approved for use in various countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom (not available in India). Arexvy (GSK) and Abrysvo (Pfizer) are the approved RSV vaccines available in US and UK for adults aged 60 and older.
