1. What is TYPBAR and its use?

TYPBAR is a vaccine employed to prevent Typhoid. Typhoid is a bacterial infection caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Salmonella typhi species. Typhoid infection is characterized by high and prolonged fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, and rash. Typhoid can lead to severe complications, including prolonged high fever that may persist for weeks or months. While Typhoid fever can be treated with antibiotics, the growing resistance to various types of antibiotics is making treatment more challenging.

  • The individual has a weakened immune system due to conditions such as HIV/AIDS, Cancer, or the use of medications that can affect the immune system.

3. How is TYPBAR administered?

TYPBAR should be administered intramuscularly in the deltoid (upper arm) muscle for adults and in the vastus lateralis (anterolateral thigh) for children up to 12 years of age. Administer 0.5 mL intramuscularly for the primary series (first dose): 1 dose (0.5 mL) for children aged 2 years and above, as well as for adults. Reimmunization every 2 years with a single dose is recommended for travelers with repeated or ongoing exposure to S. typhi.
