Boostrix – GSK

Indication and Usage –

• BOOSTRIX is indicated for active booster immunization against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis in individuals aged 10 years and older.

Dosage and Administration –

• BOOSTRIX is administered as a 0.5-mL intramuscular injection into the deltoid muscle of the upper arm.
• An initial dose of BOOSTRIX is administered 5 years or more after the last dose of the Diphtheria and Tetanus Toxoids and Acellular Pertussis (DTaP) series or 5 years or more after a dose of Tetanus and Diphtheria Toxoids Adsorbed (Td).

Contraindications –

• Hypersensitivity –

1. A severe allergic reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) after a previous dose of any tetanus toxoid-, diphtheria toxoid-, or pertussis antigen-containing vaccine or any component of this vaccine is a contraindication to administration of BOOSTRIX.
2. Because of the uncertainty as to which component of the vaccine might be responsible, none of the components should be administered.
3. Alternatively, such individuals may be referred to an allergist for evaluation if immunization with any of these components is considered.

• Encephalopathy–

1. Encephalopathy (e.g., coma, decreased level of consciousness, prolonged seizures) within 7 days of administration of a previous dose of a pertussis antigen-containing vaccine that is not attributable to another identifiable cause is a contraindication to administration of any pertussis antigen-containing vaccine, including BOOSTRIX.

Adverse reactions –

• As with all injectable vaccines severe allergic reactions (anaphylactic and anaphylactoid reactions) may occur very rarely (with up to 1 in 10,000 doses of the vaccine).
• These can be recognised by:

1. Rashes that may be itchy or blistering,
2. Swelling of the eyes and face,
3. Difficulty in breathing or swallowing,
4. A sudden drop in blood pressure and loss of consciousness.

Such reactions may occur before leaving the doctor’s surgery. However, if you or your child get any of these symptoms you should contact a doctor immediately.

Drug interactions and other interactions –

• Concomitant Vaccine Administration –

1. BOOSTRIX was administered concomitantly with MENACTRA in a clinical study of subjects aged 11 to 18 years. Post-vaccination geometric mean antibody concentrations (GMCs) to pertactin (PRN) were lower following BOOSTRIX administered concomitantly with meningococcal conjugate vaccine compared with BOOSTRIX administered first.
2. BOOSTRIX was administered concomitantly with FLUARIX (Influenza Virus Vaccine) in a clinical study of subjects aged 19 to 64 years.

• Immunosuppressive Therapies

Immunosuppressive therapies, including irradiation, antimetabolites, alkylating agents, cytotoxic drugs, and corticosteroids, may reduce the immune response to BOOSTRIX.
