Beyfortus (nirsevimab) is the first monoclonal antibody approved to protect all infants through their first RSV season. Unlike vaccines that stimulate the baby’s immune system, Beyfortus provides ready-made RSV-fighting antibodies (passive immunity) in a single shot.
Beyfortus protects against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) – a highly contagious virus that can cause:
Nearly all children get RSV by age 2, and many infants end up hospitalized each year due to RSV complications. The virus usually peaks in monsoon and winter, often causing mild cold-like symptoms, but for some infants (especially during their first infection), it can lead to severe bronchiolitis or pneumonia.

Beyfortus (generic name nirsevimab) is a monoclonal antibody – a lab-made protein – designed to prevent RSV infection in babies. The FDA approved it for infants (newborns through 8 months) in their first RSV season, and for certain children up to about 24 months in their second season. It is not a vaccine: Beyfortus doesn’t contain weakened virus or trigger a baby’s immune response. Instead, it gives immediate passive protection by supplying RSV-specific antibodies.
No. Beyfortus is a long-acting monoclonal antibody given by injection, not a vaccine. It provides passive immunity by supplying ready-made RSV antibodies, whereas vaccines trigger the baby’s own immune response.
One dose of Beyfortus is given as an intramuscular injection (like a vaccine shot) before or at the start of RSV season. This single shot is designed to last the whole season (about 5 months) and reduce the baby’s chances of getting serious RSV.
Beyfortus works by blocking RSV from entering cells in the baby’s lungs. It specifically binds to the virus’s fusion (F) protein on the virus surface. By locking onto the prefusion form of the RSV F protein, Beyfortus prevents the virus from fusing with and infecting the baby’s airway cells. In other words, Beyfortus acts as a “fusion inhibitor.” Because Beyfortus is already in antibody form, it gives immediate defence (passive immunity) as soon as it’s injected.
Beyfortus is also engineered to be long-acting: a special amino acid modification (the YTE change) extends its half-life in the blood to roughly 5 months. This means one dose provides high antibody levels throughout the entire RSV season.
Health experts recommend Beyfortus for all babies under about 8 months of age entering their first RSV season and for some 8 to 19-month-olds at high risk who are entering their second seasonlung.org . Talk to your paediatrician about whether your child is eligible (for example, every newborn now qualifies, even if healthy).
High-risk factors include being born prematurely (especially before 35 weeks), chronic lung disease of prematurity, or hemodynamically significant congenital heart disease. Children who are severely immunocompromised may also be recommended to receive it. In contrast, CDC guidance notes that children 20 months and older are generally not given Beyfortus unless there are very special circumstances. Parents should discuss with their paediatrician, whether Beyfortus is recommended for their child, especially if the baby has known risk factors.
One shot of Beyfortus works quickly and is designed to last about five months, covering one full RSV season. This means a single dose can protect through the monsoon and winter.
Clinical trials showed ~70–75% reduction in RSV illness. Side effects were generally mild (rash, injection-site soreness). Serious allergic reactions are rare.
No. Beyfortus is used only for prevention. It cannot treat an active RSV infection; it must be given before or at the start of the seasonlung.org . Children who are already ill with RSV are treated supportively (oxygen, fluids, etc.) but Beyfortus won’t cure that illness.
Generally, Beyfortus is not given to children 20 months or older. The current guidance is to use it for infants and select toddlers under about 19 months. If your child is older or healthy without risk factors, Beyfortus is typically not recommended.
The most common side effects were mild – for example, a skin rash or redness/soreness at the injection site. As with any injectable antibody, there is a warning for rare serious allergic reactions (anaphylaxis). Parents should stay for 15–30 minutes after the shot so medical staff can watch for any immediate allergic reaction. Overall, no unexpected safety issues arose in the trials, and Beyfortus has a favorable safety profile.
Beyfortus is a prescription product given by healthcare providers (pediatricians, family doctors or hospital clinics). You can schedule an appointment with INVC to receive the Beyfortus injection at your nearest center. Your trusted Experts are here to help you.
