Pneumosil – Serum International Institute

Indication and Usage –

  • Pneumosil is indicated against invasive disease, pneumonia, and acute otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes 1, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 19A, 19F, and 23F in infants and toddlers from 6 weeks up to 2 years of age.

Dosage and Administration –

  • The vaccine should be given by intramuscular injection.
  • The preferred sites are anterolateral aspect of the thigh in infants or the deltoid muscle of the upper arm in young children. 
  • Pneumosil is to be administered in infants from 6 weeks of age group for 3 dose regimen (dosing schedule : 6, 10 and 14 weeks)

Contraindications –

  • Hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine, including diphtheria toxoid.

Adverse reactions –

  • Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them
  • Common side effects of Pneumosil
  1. Loss of appetite
  2. Irritability
  3. Drowsiness
  4. Fever
  5. Injection site reactions (pain, swelling, redness)

Drug interactions and other interactions –

  • Pneumosil can be given with any of the following vaccine antigens, either as monovalent or combination vaccine: diphtheria, tetanus, whole-cell pertussis, Haemophilus influenza type b, inactivated or oral poliomyelitis, rotavirus, hepatitis B.
  • Clinical studies demonstrated that the immune responses and the safety profiles of the administered vaccines were unaffected.
