Covovax is a COVID-19 vaccine that contains the SARS-CoV-2 recombinant spike protein presented in the form of a nanoparticle.

What is Covovax and its use?

Covovax is a COVID-19 vaccine that is indicated for use in individuals 2 years of age and older. It is administered as a booster dose approximately 6 months after the completion of the second dose in the primary series of COVISHIELD or COVAXIN for individuals 18 years of age and older. This booster dose can be given as a heterologous booster (third dose).

Considerations before Covovax administration:

Before receiving the Covovax vaccine, individuals should inform their healthcare provider or doctor if they have certain medical conditions, including pregnancy, breastfeeding, fever, or a weakened immune system. A fine-gauge needle should be used for vaccination in individuals on blood-thinning medications, followed by firm pressure on the injection site to minimize bleeding risk.

The vaccine has demonstrated a booster response both as a homologous and heterologous booster, based on studies conducted both in India and outside India.

Individuals with weakened immune systems due to other illnesses or medications may receive the Covovax vaccine, but they should be aware of the potential for reduced immune responses and continue to follow current guidance to protect themselves from COVID-19.

If individuals experience signs of an allergic reaction after vaccination, they should seek immediate medical attention to prevent worsening of symptoms.
