Hajj and Umrah involve large gatherings, long hours of walking, and close contact with pilgrims from many countries. For Indian travellers, vaccination is therefore an important part of preparing for the journey.

The meningococcal vaccine is a required vaccination for Hajj and Umrah under Saudi Arabia’s current health regulations. Indian Hajj pilgrims travelling through the Haj Committee of India (HCoI) also have additional vaccination requirements, including oral polio vaccination for Hajj 2027.

Because pilgrimage health requirements can change each season, always check the latest Saudi and Indian instructions before departure.

Meningococcal Vaccine: The First One to Check!

For Indian pilgrims, the main vaccination requirement to check before traveling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah is the meningococcal vaccination.

The current published requirements for Saudi Arabia state that all intending to perform Hajj must receive an approved meningococcal vaccine covering the ACYW serogroups. For the 2026 Hajj season, an ACYW or ACYWX conjugate vaccine was valid up to five years, whereas the ACYW polysaccharide vaccine was valid up to three years. In either case, you must be fully vaccinated at least 10 days before arrival.

The present Umrah guidelines are the same fundamental rule: All individuals coming to Saudi Arabia for Umrah must possess a certified meningococcal vaccine, with the mandatory vaccination to be completed a minimum of 10 days before arrival.

The vaccination certificate shall clearly state the vaccine name and the date of vaccination. Saudi authorities also said if the certificate does not specify the type of vaccine, it will be valid for three years from the date of vaccination.

What does Hajj 2027 require for Indian pilgrims?

The Haj Committee of India has already published its Hajj 2027 policy.

For selected HCoI pilgrims:

• A certificate showing a single dose of the cerebrospinal meningitis vaccine is required
• The vaccination certificate is recorded on the Health and Training (HAT) Card
• The certificate must be signed by the district health officer
• HCoI says the required vaccines will be provided through arrangements involving State/UT Haj Committees and health authorities.
  
  

Hajj 2027 Has Another Requirement: Oral Polio Vaccine

For Indian pilgrims traveling through HCoI, Hajj 2027 has a specific polio requirement.

The Hajj 2027 policy states that:

• Oral polio vaccination is mandatory for all HCoI pilgrims.
• The vaccine must be given six weeks before the start of the Hajj journey.
• The oral polio vaccination certificate is recorded on the HAT Card.
• Another oral polio dose will be given at disembarkation in Saudi Arabia.

This should not be confused with Saudi Arabia's general country-specific polio entry rules. In its current 2026 Hajj guidance, Saudi Arabia requires polio vaccination for travellers arriving from specified countries affected by poliovirus; India is not included in those mandatory country lists. The HCoI requirement for its Hajj pilgrims is a separate Indian pilgrimage arrangement.

What About Umrah?

Saudi Arabia’s health regulations for 1447H (2026) require all Umrah travelers, regardless of their country of origin, to be vaccinated against meningococcal disease.

For other vaccines, requirements may depend on the traveler's origin and itinerary. For example, Saudi Arabia requires some polio and yellow fever requirements for travelers from listed countries, but not for all international pilgrims.

Is the Flu Vaccine Required for Hajj?

The seasonal influenza vaccine is not listed as a universal Saudi entry requirement in the current Hajj health document.

However, Saudi health authorities advise all people intending to perform Hajj to receive the updated seasonal influenza vaccine before travel.

Saudi guidance also recommends keeping routine vaccinations up to date, including vaccines against:

• Diphtheria
• Tetanus
• Pertussis
• Polio
• Measles
• Chickenpox
• Mumps

These routine vaccines should be viewed as part of general health preparation, not automatically as Saudi entry requirements.

COVID-19: Does Every Pilgrim Need Proof?

Not every pilgrim is subject to the same COVID-19 requirement.

Under Saudi Arabia's current Umrah 2026 guidance, proof of vaccination or immunity is required for certain higher-risk groups, including people:

• Above 65 years of age
• Who are pregnant
• With chronic heart or respiratory disease
• With chronic kidney failure
• With sickle-cell disease or thalassemia
• With certain immune deficiencies
• With cancer
• With chronic neurological diseases.

For Hajj, the current Saudi guidance also requires COVID-19 proof for specified groups and advises travellers to follow the updated WHO vaccination roadmap.

Because these requirements are season-specific, pilgrims should check the rules applicable to the year of travel.

Yellow Fever is Only Relevant for Certain Travel Routes

An Indian pilgrim travelling directly from India does not normally need a yellow fever vaccination simply because the journey is to Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia requires yellow fever vaccination for travellers arriving from specified countries in Africa and South America. The requirement therefore becomes relevant when the travel history or itinerary includes one of those countries. The yellow fever certificate is valid for life, beginning 10 days after vaccination.

When Should Pilgrims Get Vaccinated?

Vaccination should not be left until the final days before departure.

The Saudi requirement for meningococcal vaccination is clear: it must be administered at least 10 days before arrival. For Hajj 2027 through HCoI, oral polio vaccination has an earlier deadline of six weeks before the Hajj journey.

Beginning the vaccination review several weeks beforehand also allows time to review previous vaccination records and schedule any additional vaccines recommended based on the pilgrim’s age, health, or travel history.

Hajj Health: Vaccines Are Not Everything!

Pilgrimage health includes everyday precautions. Saudi Arabia advises pilgrims to:

• Make sure you stay hydrated and don’t be in the direct Sun too long.
• Use a face mask in crowded places and in rituals where it is appropriate.
• Wash your hands often and practice respiratory etiquette.
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Do not share personal items.
• Make sure you have enough regular medications in their original containers.
• Maintain medical records that detail current medical conditions.

Saudi guidance also recommends precautions against dengue fever and other mosquito-borne infections such as the use of insect repellent and covering up with clothing.

Food and water hygiene are also important. Pilgrims are advised to wash hands before eating, eat properly cooked food and avoid unsafe food and drink.

What Should Indian Pilgrims Carry?

Keep copies of your vaccination certificates with your main travel documents.

For HCoI Hajj pilgrims, the Health and Training (HAT) Card is especially important because it records vaccination information. HCoI also requires medical screening and a fitness certificate as part of the Hajj process.

It is also sensible to keep:

• Previous vaccination records
• Meningococcal vaccination certificate
• Oral polio certificate, where applicable
• Medical reports or a summary of existing conditions
• Prescriptions
